An integrative approach is taken, covering four distinct levels of screen printing practice – occupational, artistic, commercial, and industrial – in order to provide a cultural and promotional perspective on the potential of screen printing, as a stimulus for further and expanded research that the user can and should undertake.
Silk Screen
The practice of stenciling corresponds to the oldest evidence of the formation of a printing technique, with more than 30 thousand years of existence, from which a very simple permeagraphic printing process was derived – which came to be called Silk Screen and, later, Print Screen and Serigraphy. Nowadays, this system both adapts to the most sophisticated technological advances and maintains its traditional aspect dedicated to the skills of artists and artisans, making it the most timeless and captivating printing technique.

Screen printing makes it possible to print on any material, of any thickness and format, with any type of ink, in any quantity and for any purpose. Its versatility includes the great advantage of low investment, both in equipment and consumables. On a first level, technical knowledge is not even necessary, and anyone, at any age, can learn Screen Printing independently, practicing it in their own home. The guide covers the entire process of manual screen printing that can be carried out in a living space, but without neglecting a series of transversal knowledge at other levels of practice, highlighting safety and sustainability advice. The intention of an integrative approach stands out, in order to expose how the lines that separate an occupational practice from an artistic practice or even a commercial practice can be as distinct as they are complementary. A series of references and small background notes on the history of printing in general are also provided. The content is mostly theoretical, with few photographic resources and many drawn illustrations, without any accuracy of reality.
About The Author
43-art.work is a website created by D Almeida, a final-art professional since 1997, who began her career in commercial screen printing, quickly evolving to other printing techniques. From 2016 onwards, she dedicated herself to artistic work and studies in other areas. She structured and laid out this Guide from a well-founded introductory perspective, sharing theoretical explanations often overlooked due to modern simplification, considering that understanding the origin of certain terms and mechanisms can be surprisingly subtle in influencing practical performance.
